NHS charity launches COVID-19 Appeal to support ‘Hospital Heroes’

An appeal has been launched to support staff at St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands Hospitals during the coronavirus crisis.
Love Your Hospital, the dedicated charity of Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, has launched the ‘Hospital Heroes COVID-19’ Appeal to help staff caring for patients with the virus.
The charity, which raises funds to provide state-of-the-art medical equipment, upgrade hospital facilities and support staff development, is now focusing its efforts on supporting the health and wellbeing of clinical and non-clinical staff being hailed by the local community as ‘Hospital Heroes’.
Alan McCarthy, trust chairman said: “We are all so proud of our dedicated staff who are showing real resilience in helping us to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.
“Not only are they caring for the most vulnerable in our communities, but many staff are isolated from their own families and working longer hours than expected so they can be there for us all. I do hope everyone will get behind our charity’s Hospital Heroes COVID-19 appeal to help give back to staff during this challenging time.”
Coronavirus in the UK is still rising with the Government predicting more cases will emerge in the coming weeks. NHS staff – including nurses, doctors, midwives, paramedics, domestic cleaners, porters, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals – are among the most vital key workers in the ongoing fight against this virus.
Funds raised from the appeal could help the charity provide ‘Comfort Packs’ for staff working long shifts, especially those who are staying in emergency accommodation, away from their own homes and families.
Unfortunately, due to hospital restrictions at present, St Richard’s, Worthing and Southlands Hospitals cannot accept physical donations or gifts. Instead, staff are encouraging people to donate money so that the Trust can best decide where the need is greatest.
David Clayton-Evans, head of charity at Love Your Hospital, said: “We have been amazed at the level of support coming in from people across West Sussex and we know there is a real desire to make sure NHS staff are being cared for too.
“We have launched this COVID-19 appeal to do just that and I’d like to say a heartfelt thanks in advance to everyone for their support of our wonderful hospital teams who are doing a tremendous job.”

Family raises £1,650 for neonatal unit
A couple have raised more than £1,600 for Love Your Hospital, the trust’s dedicated charity, to thank staff on the neonatal unit at St Richard’s Hospital for the care provided to their premature twins.
Initially planned to be born at St Richards, Poppy and Jessica Jennions arrived 10 weeks and 1 day early on 25th August 2018, prompting a change of venue to the Queen Alexander Hospital in Portsmouth.
At ten days old, the twins were strong enough to be transferred for specialist care at St Richard’s Hospital for a further 40 days, where they were treated for chronic lung disease and anaemia before finally going home. They then spent a further seven weeks on oxygen under the care of a St Richard’s outreach nurse.
Parents Lauren and Philip from Havant wanted to find a special way to support both neonatal units involved in the twins’ care and arranged an 18 mile charity walk on 20th April, starting at the Queen Alexander and ending at St Richard’s Hospital.

Hair raising charity stunt to support Urology services
Six members of Bognor Golf Club have raised more than £1900 for local hospital services… by growing moustaches.
The golfers ditched their razors to support an appeal launched by hospital staff to improve urology care in West Sussex.
Paul Carter, Consultant Urological Surgeon for Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the Chichester Nuffield Hospital, was delighted to receive the unexpected cheque in the post.
He said: “We are absolutely thrilled with this donation from the Bognor Golf Club. We have already raised a significant amount of money for Love Your Hospital, the trust’s dedicated charity, and are keen to use these funds raised by the members specifically to improve equipment used in our multi-disciplinary team meetings where we discuss our local cancer patients.”
Official opening of bereavement suite at Worthing Hospital

Sepsis survivor stages fundraising singathon for staff who saved her life
Pat Davies was admitted to Worthing Hospital A&E after falling seriously ill with sepsis, a serious and life-threatening condition that arises when the body’s response to infection causes injury to its own tissues and organs. “I was moments from death when I arrived at A&E,” said Pat. “The diagnosis came after I was transferred to Castle ward and it was there that I received the most amazing care.”
